Last week we talked about our product, Irregular Past Tense: What Happened First & Second (Basic Level). This week we are talking about the Irregular Past Tense: What Happened First/Second Advanced Level!
We heard great feedback from clinicians about our irregular past tense activities. So of course we wanted to share with you!
What is it?
The Advanced Irregular Past Tense practice is geared towards kindergarten through third grade, whereas the basic edition is recommended for pre-k through second grade. The only difference is the use of age-appropriate target words! Both the basic and advanced editions are available for purchase individually and as a part of our Irregular Past Tense: What Happened 1st and 2nd Series Bundle.
To remind you, the “Irregular Past Tense: What Happened 1st and 2nd” series contain no-prep, no-print language activities, for small groups and individual work. Both digital activities are engaging for students who are working on irregular past tense verbs at the word, phrase, or sentence level. It can also serve as a seamless transition between sentence drills and conversational speech. Plus, the images in the Irregular Past Tense Series are fun, colorful, and sure to keep your students engaged. With 17 stimulus slides and 34 target words, you’re sure to get plenty of reps!
In the activity, two pictures of a character completing different actions will pop up under the titles “1st”, and “2nd.” Below the image, the present tense verbs describing the character’s actions are introduced. Students will tell what the character did first and second, using the irregular past tense of the target verbs. See below!
Who is it for?
As mentioned above, the Advanced edition is best suited for K-3. Remember that not all students are at the same level as their age-matched peers, so we suggest using your clinical judgment to determine which activity best suits your student’s needs.
Our Irregular Past Tense Activity can be used for both small groups/individual work and is for readers and non-readers alike! It’s an engaging activity for students who are working on irregular past tense at the word, phrase, or sentence level. It’s also great to use when transitioning from sentence drills to conversational speech!
How to use it?
To use, set PowerPoint to “Present / Slide Show” mode and, beginning with the 3rd slide, click for each animation or to advance to the next slide.
As you click through the slide show, two pictures of a character completing different actions will pop up under the titles “1st”, and “2nd.” Below the image, the present tense verbs describing the character’s actions are introduced. Students will tell what the character did first and second, using the irregular past tense of the target verbs. For example, “First the girl lost her tooth and second/next she slept,” or “First the girl lost her tooth, then she slept in bed.”
If working at the word level, students can be asked to say the correct irregular past tense of the target verb. For non-readers, you could read the present tense verb aloud. If they aren’t quite ready for sentence level, students could be asked to give the irregular past tense with a short carrier phrase like, “Lost her tooth” or “She slept.” If they are working at the sentence level, they could either imitate a sentence or, once they catch on, spontaneously narrate each slide.
