#FreebieFriday: Laughable Moving Sentences ER

Posted by

It’s almost the beginning of the gift-giving season and we’d love to give a gift to you!

Laughable Moving Sentences was inspired by an idea Worldwide Speech used way before we began publishing our materials! We were using PowerPoint to allow our students to make silly sentences for their articulation sounds. We used this PowerPoint religiously, but since the images weren’t stock, we couldn’t put them up immediately. Lisa, our marvelous material maker, has been working on using stock images to recreate this fun-tastical powerpoint!

In our personal PowerPoint, we displayed a sentence with 3 blanks with stacks of target word pictures. For example: The _____ ate the _____ with a _____. By using the target word picture in the blank, the sentence might say something like, “The frog ate the fried chicken with a friend.” Or it could be rearranged to say something silly like, “The french fries ate the frog with a fruit juice.” We all know kids love having control over their activities, so allowing them to choose the target words for their silly sentences helped them stay engaged and motivated.

As we branched out to making materials for TPT, we recreated this PowerPoint with colorful and diverse images from Smarty Ears.

What is it?

Vocalic R Laughable Moving Sentences “er”, /ɚ/ is a no-prep, no-print speech sound activity. It’s an engaging activity for telepractice and in-person articulation students who are working on vocalic /r/ at the sentence level. This digital activity also serves as a delightful transition between phrase level and sentence level. The images in Laughable Moving Sentences are fun, colorful, and sure to keep your individual and small group students engaged. Laughable Moving Sentences contains 16 target words practiced at the word level and within sentences to ensure your student has plenty of opportunities to practice their target sound.

Who is it for?

This activity is great for students working on the vocalic “er” diphthong at the sentence level. It can be used for readers and non-readers alike. The images aren’t too childish, so it works for older students too.

Vocalic /r/ sounds are often the most challenging for kids. However, it’s likely that one r vowel is more stimulable or challenging than the others, depending on the child. Vocalic r Laughable Moving Sentences allows you to target each /r/ diphthong individually, to achieve success for that particular /ɚ/ combination and carry that success over to other vocalic /r/ sounds.

How to use it?

To use, all you have to do is press “present / slide show” mode and click! A slide will show up with a sentence containing 2 target words. As you click, new words appear that make you laugh out loud! The sentences continuously change and allow plenty of repetitions to practice vocalic /r/. After several slides, the sentence length increases to 3 target words. This requires students to produce vocalic /r/ in more and more target words, over and over! Following each sentence, students can answer questions about it, to work on the spontaneous production of target words. For example, ask your student why a word seems silly in context (e.g. “Why would a chocolate bar have a birthday party?” or “Why are those sentences silly?”). For even more practice, kids can retell the story, focusing on vocalic /r/ in conversational speech.
